Canine bone marrow mononuclear cells are derived from the bone marrow of beagle dog. When checking if the newly developed drugs are efficient and safe, canines are quite useful as a non-rodent model due to their similar morphology and physiology in anatomy compared to humans. Bone marrow mononuclear cells(BMMCs) are a heterogenous mixture, consisting of several types of cells, including monocytes, lymphocytes, and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Among these bone marrow mononuclear cells, hematopoietic stem cell is the major cell population.

Results showed that newly formed bone tissue was observed at the site of implantation. Moreover, a clinical trial showed that the transplantation of bone marrow mononuclear cells significantly increased the recovery rate of an acute spinal cord injury of the dog. In humans, bone marrow mononuclear cells transplantation has been widely accepted as a safe and reliable treatment for leukemia.
