HARA, also known as KCC-C1, is established from malignant pleural effusion of a patient with squamous cell lung carcinoma. These cells exhibit a distinctive trait of producing notable quantities of parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP), as evidenced by both PTHrP RNA transcripts and substantial PTHrP secretion. Alongside PTHrP, the cell culture medium demonstrates a notable presence of interleukin 1 (IL-1). When transplanted into nude mice, KCC-C1 cells drive tumor formation coupled with hypercalcemia.
