HCT-116, a cell line originating from the colorectal tissue of an adult male diagnosed with colon cancer, is characterized by a specific mutation in codon 13 of the ras proto-oncogene. These cells exhibit a positive immunoperoxidase staining for keratin and demonstrate the expression of transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF beta 1) and beta 2 (TGF beta 2). In culture, HCT-116 cells exhibit an epithelial-like morphology, growing as a monolayer. Their growth and plating efficiency are notably enhanced when co-cultured with murine fibroblasts.
