Natural killer (NK) cells are important immune cells that display both anti-infection and antitumor activities. They are defined as CD56 positive and CD3 negative. CD56 or neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) is a pathogen recognition receptor that allows NK cells to initiate cytotoxicity in the immune response. Activated NK cells release immune regulatory cytokines, such as interferon (IFN)-γ and TNFα, and display cytotoxicity. NK cells can recognize MHC class I–deficient hematopoietic cells, enabling them to quickly identify and kill stressed cells in the absence of antibodies and MHC complex.
