The Human Kidney Podocyte Cells are primary cells isolated from human kidney. They are specialized cells located in the kidney glomerulus, enveloping capillaries and neighboring cells of the Bowman’s capsule. These cells actively participate in glomerular filtration by acting as a barrier against plasma proteins entering the urinary ultrafiltrate. This barrier is formed by filtration slits between their foot processes, which create a dynamic network of cellular extensions. Podocytes rely on vesicular transport, a significant process in their polarized nature. Injury to podocytes can lead to various kidney diseases, with the extent and reversibility of the injury carrying significant implications for treatment and prognosis. In a healthy state, podocytes play a crucial role in preventing proteinuria.
