LP-1, a cell line derived from a patient with IgG-lambda myeloma, displays characteristics reminiscent of immature plasma cells. While it secretes IgG-lambda chains, LP-1 cells exhibit an intermediate membrane phenotype between late B lymphocytes and plasma cells. When exposed to 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) or pokeweed mitogen (PWM), these cells manifest surface markers and ultrastructural features which are typical of mature plasma cells, with no impact on their ability to proliferate. Molecular analysis of LP-1 demonstrates an increased expression of the c-myc protooncogene and the presence of transcripts with abnormal sizes.
