Rat Aortic Endothelial Cells (RAEC), isolated from the rat aorta, are a pivotal component of the blood-tissue interface. They exhibit a dichotomous functionality, generating both antithrombotic factors such as tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and prothrombotic elements like plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1). Upon stimulation by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), RAEC undergo alterations in growth characteristics and release cytokines, notably granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). Moreover, RAEC exhibit reduced permeability in response to Intermedin (IMD) due to the enhanced accumulation of VE-cadherin at their intercellular junctions.
