Vero Cells Derivation
Known as African green monkey kidney epithelial cells, Vero cell line is one of the most commonly used mammalian continuous and aneuploid cell lines in biology research. Vero cell line is used to regard as Cercopithecus aethiops derived, which has been placed within the genus Chlorocebus. Now the Vero cell line is cited and designated as Chlorocebus aethiops.
Vero cells are derived from normal kidney cells of African green monkey; therefore, they maintain the contact inhibition. It is of great importance to monitor the Vero cell culture during proliferation in case they reach confluency, stop growing and start to die.

The 9-Mb deficiency on chromosome 12 was found by genome sequence analysis on Vero cells. This induces the loss of type 1 gene interferon gene cluster and cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor CDKN2A and CDKN2B genes. Thus, Vero cells do not secrete interferon α or β, and are susceptible to virus infection like SV40 and bacterial toxins like diphtheria toxin and Shiga-like. However, the Vero cells still respond to recombinant interferon because they maintain interferon α or β receptor.
